Morality or Moralism, An Exercice in Sensitization

The ANT argument has often been suspected of dubious moral grounds ; the accusation is made by those who use a roughly kantian definition of what it is to occupy a moral upper ground. By following the contrasts between four different texts (Comte-Sponville, Kant, Serres et Lovelock), the paper explores what an ‘objective morality’ would look like and how to compare the Kantian axiology with the ANT’s possible definition of an object-oriented-morality.

Biography of an Inquiry - About a Book on Modes of Existence

Since the project on Modes of Existence has been long in coming and has connection with all the successive field works done by the author, the paper tries to retrace the main steps that have led to the project. It shows that this project precedes the work done in actor-network theory and explains the link between philosophy and anthropology through the peculiar notion of mode of existence.

Rejoicing – or the torments of religious speech: that is what he wants to talk about, that is what he can’t actually seem to talk about: it’s as though the cat had got his tongue; as though he was spoilt for choice when it comes to words; as though it was impossible to articulate; he can’t actually seem to share what, for so long, he has held so dear to his heart; before his nearest and dearest, he is forced to cover up; he can only stutter; how can he own up to his friends, to his colleagues, his nephews, his students?

As every ethnographer knows, in addition to the many blunders every one of us commits in the course of our fieldwork, there exist also graver mistakes when we sense a mistaken regime of reality granted to an entity. It is at those moments, usually the most revealing in the course of our inquiries, when we try to repair broken relations by some innovative move to define the status of the contrasting realities that have been open to misinterpretation.

On some of the affects of capitalism

I will take capitalism to mean not a thing in the world, but a certain way of being affected when trying to think through this strange mixture of miseries and luxuries we encounter when trying to come to terms with the dizzying interplays of “goods” and “bads”. Capitalism is a concept that has been invented to help absorb this odd mixture of enthusiasm for the cornucopia of riches that has lifted billions of people out of abject poverty and the indignation, rage and fury in response to the miseries visited on billions of other people.

A useful film going through most features of the AIME platform

Christophe Leclercq has prepared a film going (silently) through most of the features of the AIME platform accessible on modesofexistence.org
If you wish to have the sound you should go to the full presentation shown here.

The diplomatic encounter between the different tiers of co-inquirers, "chargés d'affaires" and public (including the public present through the video stream) has taken place as scheduled, marking the provisional end of the collective part of the AIME project (the site will continue and the software behind will be entirely rewritten over the next months). As to the book it will be rewritten also but only in 2016 under the form of a catalog for the exhibition Modernity Reset at ZKM, Karlsruhe.

The AIME project continues but at a smaller scale

No no no the AIME project is not finished. We got an extension from the ERC to redo the software that is behind the site -after many criticisme from users and designers- so that it is made more durable, fast and users's friendly. In the meantime the principle of edited contributions continue as before - we will be slower in answering since the staff is much reduced - and anyway the mass of documents already in line is enough to keep readers busy for quite a while.
