: 200- Résumé d’une enquête sur les modes
d’existence ou bref éloge de la civilisation qui vient
(en préparation) (le manuscrit de cet ouvrage en
chantier a fait l'objet d'une semaine de discussion à Cerisy
la Salle au cours du colloque du 23 au 30 juin 2007).
For now twenty years, a systematic study has been conducted of the
various regimes of enunciation or modes of existence ; this book
is a summary of that long term inquiry and allows for a more positive
anthropology of modernity than the one that begun with the argument
that « we have never been modern ». It begins to answer
the question : « if we have never been modern, then what has
happened to us ? » and how can we inherit from a different
tradition of rationality. Fourteen successive modes of existence
are contrasted with one another, the general idea being that the
various modernist traditions have each extracted one or two of those
modes but also, because of the hegemony of one mode over the others,
precluded the deployment of all of them simultaneously. This deployment
is the task of a diplomatic use of philosophy or philosophical anthropology
and « civilisation » the name given to such a deployment.
The key question being to know whether or not the former «
westerners » may become at last civilised… (The manuscript
of this book will be discussed during the Cerisy week in June 2007)

« Il faut changer de société
», dit on souvent et on a bien raison car celle ou nous vivons
est souvent irrespirable. Mais, pour y parvenir, il faut peut-être
d’abord s’efforcer de changer la notion même de
société. En effet, il y a maintenant une tension de
plus en plus forte entre pratiquer la sociologie, penser la politique
et croire en l’existence d’une société.
Afin de trouver une issue, ce livre veut d’abord pousser cette
tension à bout.
C’est pourquoi il faut distinguer deux définitions
du social. La première, devenue dominante dans la sociologie,
présente le social comme l’ombre projetée par
la société sur d’autres activités, par
exemple l’économie, le droit, la science, etc. Dans
cette optique, le social ne change jamais puisque la société
est toujours déjà là, et le sociologue peut
tranquillement continuer à produire des « explications
sociales ».
La seconde préfère considérer le social comme
l’association nouvelle entre des êtres surprenants qui
viennent briser la certitude confortable d’appartenir au même
monde commun ; le social au deuxième sens se modifie constamment.
Et, pour le suivre, il faut d’autres méthodes d’enquête,
d’autres terrains, d’autres exigences. C’est grâce
à eux qu’il sera possible d’étudier les
nouvelles « associations », toujours imprévues,
entre, par exemple, les virus, les pénuries, les passions,
les innovations techniques, les pays émergents, les rumeurs,
les catastrophes naturelles, etc.
C’est à retracer le social comme association que s’attache
depuis trente ans ce qu’on a appelle la « sociologie
de l’acteur-réseau » et que Bruno Latour présente
dans ce livre. Sa proposition est simple : entre la société
et la sociologie, il faut choisir. Après avoir montré
pourquoi la notion de « nature » rendait la politique
impossible, il faut maintenant se faire à l’idée
que la notion de société, à son tour, est devenue
l’ennemi de toute pensée du politique. Et donc refaire
de la sociologie.

Everyone
seems to know with what sort of forces and in which sort of materials
the social world is made. I have always been struck, on the contrary,
by the huge gap between the vast variety of attachments with which
people elaborate their different worlds and the limited repertoire
we possess in social science to account for them. I found this gap
widening even more when I began, thirty years ago, to provide a
social explanation of scientific practice. While most people said
such an enterprise was clearly non sense; while some of my close
colleagues claimed it was, if not easy, at least feasible within
the normal limits of the humans sciences, a few friends and I decided
to take the enormous difficulties of this task as the occasion to
rethink the notions of society and of social explanation. Starting
from the new insights of science studies, we have since explored
many other domains from technology to health, from market organisations
to art, from religion to law, from management to politics. This
alternative way of practicing sociology has been called Actor-Network-Theory
or ANT. Although it has been widely used, it has also been largely
misunderstood — in part because of the ambiguity of the word
‘social’. To clarify those misunderstandings, I thought
useful to write an introduction to this small school of thought
— or rather to propose my own version of it. In this book
I show why sociology may be construed as the science of associations
and not only as the science of the social. This reformulation of
what is meant by the two terms of ‘science’ and ‘society’
will lead us to revisit several neglected traditions, especially
that of Gabriel Tarde. In this book, readers will be offered a different
way to fulfil the three duties of sociology: how to deploy the controversies
about the social world; how to retrace the means through which they
are stabilized; and, finally, how to gain some political relevance.

An ethnography of the French supreme court in administrative law,
the Conseil d'Etat, has been pursued between 1994 and 1999. This
book is the account of this field work attempting to make a thick
description of the work of judges as they come to an agreement about
files. The book represents a sort of "laboratory life"
of judges at work and tries to compare the type of objectivity reached
in science laboratories with a very different but highly specific
type of objectivity in the law. It is also an effort to characterize
the juridical enunciation and thus a contribution to the long term
enquiry into the comparison of regimes of enunciation.

An exploration of a type of enunciation, recognizable in religious speech-acts, that is characterized by its unability to transport information or communication. In order to study this regime of enunciation a specific style has to be adopted that revisits the Christian tradition in which the author has been raised. The emphasis is being put on the difficulties of this speech act, difficulties that are mimicked by the hesitating style. But the effort is also analytical since it is part of teh alrger project to compare regimes of enunciation. Thus, the book tries to sort out two specific questions: what is the modus operandi of the invention of new tradition on the one hand; what sort of beings are those that are so sensitive to the quality of the speech-act, on the other.

A political
philosophy enquiry into the limits of political ecology. If nature
is not a part of reality but a Constitutional arrangment to make
political life impossible, what would a politics be without nature
? If this question is raised then it becomes obvious that the various
green movements are not modifying the modernist project but giving
it, on the contrary, a new lease on life. To get out of this limitation,
new institutions have to be devised -by following what ecological
crisis are showing already in practice- that allows for scientific
facts to be elaborated through due process. This book follows closely
on Pandora's Hope and We Have Never Been Modern.
